Change Ups: Apple Spice opens in Byron Center

Apple Spice, a boxed lunch and catering company, has a new location in West Michigan. The company’s 3,000-square-foot storefront is in the Orchard Plaza center at 701 68th St. SW in Byron Center. Husband-and-wife owners Mike & Nancy Jacobs chose the 68th Street location because freeway access allows them to deliver within a 30-minute radius, which includes all of the greater Grand Rapids area, from Zeeland to Ada and Comstock Park to Byron Center. They are open for breakfast and lunch, pickup or delivery, 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday through Friday with breakfast deliveries available earlier.

The Grand Rapids Public Museum’s July 6 Front Row for the Fireworks celebration had nearly 1,700 attendees celebrate Independence Day with patriotic activities throughout the GRPM, which ended with front row seats to the city of Grand Rapids’ fireworks display. Thanks to donations and sponsors from the community, GRPM was able to bring over 635 foster children and their families to enjoy Front Row for the Fireworks at no cost. GRPM hosts foster children and their families at Front Row for the Fireworks annually, working with Samaritas, West Michigan Ronald McDonald House, D.A. Blodgett-St. John’s Home, Bethany Christian Services, Kids Food Basket, Catholic Charities of West Michigan, Wellspring Lutheran Services and Family Promise.

CONSTRUCTION

Ada-based Erhardt Construction hired Karli Jackson as an assistant project manager. Jackson graduated from Ferris State University in May 2019 with a bachelor’s degree in construction management.

GOVERNMENT

Deputy chief Eric Payne was selected as Grand Rapids Police Department’s new police chief. Payne, who has been a member of department for 32 years, was among three finalists for the position. He has served as GRPD’s deputy chief of operations for nearly two years.

HEALTH

Urban You Beauty Bar and Medical Spa was recognized, after two years in business, as one of the Top 3 Providers in West Michigan, as well as reaching a Diamond Status with Allergan, the company that makes cosmetic injectable products Botox and Juvederm. Allergan awards the Diamond Status based on the provider’s compliance with training, education and volume of cosmetic injectable treatments performed. Urban You also announced it will open a third location in Northville this fall. Additional locations are in development.

Deckorators, a manufacturer of composite decking and a brand of Universal Consumer Products Inc., a subsidiary of Universal Forest Products Inc., approved CAMO’s EdgeClip and EdgeXClip fasteners for use with their grooved deck boards. CAMO Edge Screws also are on the Deckorators compatible fastener list, having previously been approved for use with their square profile deck boards. Manufactured by National Nail, these fastener systems were designed with contractor input to help them efficiently fasten deck boards and achieve a fastener-free surface.

Mill Steel Co. announced the rebrand of its steel framing company, Steel Structural Products, to Mill Steel Framing.

Norton Shores-based Dynamic Conveyor Corp. hired John Stong as sales manager.

D.A. Blodgett-St. John’s announced Andre Daley was hired as director of diversity, inclusion and engagement. He brings with him more than 13 years of experience working in the social justice, diversity, equity and inclusion fields.

The NorthStar Care Community in Ann Arbor hired Patricia Van Pelt in the newly created role of director of leadership development. Van Pelt will use her years of experience — coupled with her passionate advocacy for the not-for-profit’s mission — to promote hospice and palliative to anyone who needs it, regardless of their age, diagnosis or ability to pay.

PUBLIC RELATIONS

Bill Herbst, vice president at SeyferthPR, joined the firm’s ownership team as principal. Herbst’s background includes more than 25 years of experience in journalism and public relations. Herbst joined SeyferthPR in 2016 and has worked on media relations and strategy for many of the firm’s clients, including McDonald’s, Envision Ada, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. Herbst has led the development of the SPR video production department, which offers a variety of services, including everything from video news releases to long-form training videos.

X-Rite Inc. and Pantone LLC announced its new Cup and Cylinder Fixture (CCF) helps manufacturers measure and control color on small plastic parts, cups, bottles, tubes and other curved surfaces without damaging the sample. The CCF works with the eXact and Ci6x families of portable handheld devices to measure cylinder shapes and labels for a range of packaging, plastics and industrial applications. The new fixture solves quality control requirements from customers who need to measure color on final products using a nondestructive testing method.

Experience Grand Rapids reported the economic impact of meetings and conventions brought to Grand Rapids/Kent County for July: total number of meetings: 19; total attendees: 5,680; total hotel nights: 7,249; and total estimated spending: $7,965,722.

Ottawa County, and its website, miottawa.org, were named 10th in the nation compared to counties with populations from 250,000-499,000 by the Center for Digital Government and the National Association of Counties’ 17th annual Digital Counties Survey. The award identifies U.S. counties with the best practices, including initiatives that streamline delivery of government services, encourage collaboration and enhance cybersecurity. A 2018 citizen survey found support for Ottawa’s online presence as well: 76% of residents who had visited miottawa.org offered a positive assessment; and 81% of citizens aged 18-49 said they would prefer doing business online versus visiting an office.
