Change Ups: ArtServe taps Rosen for board of directors

ArtServe Michigan, a statewide nonprofit arts and cultural advocacy organization, announced David M. Rosen, president of Kendall College of Art & Design of Ferris State University, was elected to the board of directors. Rosen was tapped because of his passion and knowledge on creative economy and arts education issues, the role the arts plays in Michigan’s success, and how business and creativity converge to build opportunity for entrepreneurship and talent attraction.

ACCOUNTING

Himebaugh, Tamm & Co. PC announced the addition of Michael J. Pelkey, staff accountant. Pelkey is a graduate of New Hampshire College and a certified public accountant, a master analyst in financial forensics and a certified exit planning analyst.

ARCHITECTURE & ENGINEERING

Integrated Architecture electrical engineer William Swanson has been appointed to serve on the U.S. Green Building Council’s Sustainable Site Technical Advisory Group, one of six groups charged with providing technical advice to assure LEED standards and pre-requisites are based on the highest quality technical and scientific considerations.

ARTS

Opera Grand Rapids announced soprano Chelsea Helm of Western Michigan University earned first place in its annual Collegiate Vocal Competition. Andrea Fleming of Grand Valley State University claimed second place, and Hope College’s Jenna Buck took home third place.

BANKING

Lake Michigan Credit Union announced the additions of Randy Koetje, loan officer for its Knapp Corner branch; Jon Mulder, mortgage originator for the Holland/Lakeshore area; and Carlton “Jake” Jacobson, financial advisor for the Kalamazoo/southwest area. Jennifer Dearnley was promoted to marketing project coordinator at the Glenwood Hills corporate HQ.

BUSINESS SERVICES

CSM Group announced its development manager, Kristin Kremer, has been inducted into the Michigan Center for Empowerment and Economic Development. Kremer chairs CSM Group’s diversity committee and is an active member of the West Michigan Minority Contractor Association and Michigan Diversity Connection.

CONSTRUCTION

Gov. Rick Synder has recognized Owen-Ames-Kimball, Grand River Builders, Detroit area architect Tom Roberts Architects, Tibbits Opera Foundation and Arts Council Inc. with the 2013 Governor’s Awards for Historic Preservation for restoration of the historic Tibbits Opera House in Coldwater.

Kelly Rodriguez has joined Dan Vos Construction Co.’s design team as AE project administrator. Her responsibilities include project tracking and coordination of project submittals.

EDUCATION

Grand Rapids Community College has named former college dean and professor Gary Burbridge its Emeritus Faculty/Administrator for 2013. During his 37-year career at GRCC, Burbridge taught anthropology in the social sciences and behavioral sciences departments, and earned the titles of department head, assistant dean, and dean of arts and sciences. The award will be presented at GRCC’s May 3 commencement.

GRANTS

Calvin College education professor John Walcott received a $200,000 Improving Teacher Quality Grant from the Michigan Department of Education. Walcott and English professors Elizabeth Vander Lei and Dean Ward will work for a year-and-a-half with teachers from Lighthouse Academy and The Potter’s House Christian School. Calvin math professor Jan Koop also received a $200,000 grant to work for a year-and-a-half with K- sixth grade teachers from four area schools: Parkview Elementary School, AnchorPoint Christian School, New Branches and William C. Abney Academy.

Robert M. Hendershot, associate professor of history at Grand Rapids Community College, has been awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities that will allow him to spend a month living and studying in India this summer.

HEALTH

Dr. Steven L. Ringler has been recognized by Castle Connolly as one of the Top Doctors in plastic surgery for 2013. Ringler has relocated his Center for Aesthetics and Plastic Surgery practice to 1151 East Paris Ave. SE.

Becker’s Hospital Review has named Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital one of 100 Great Hospitals in America. Butterworth Hospital was one of six Michigan hospitals to earn the recognition.

HUMAN SERVICES

Ele’s Place, a healing center for grieving children and teens, held a Healing Hearts Society Fundraising Breakfast April 9. The event was underwritten by the Peter C. and Emajean Cook Foundation and the David and Carol Van Andel Foundation and raised nearly $300,000 in donations from the 450 guests who attended the fundraiser.

LEGAL

Miller Johnson attorneys W. Jack Keiser, Michael B. Quinn and Connie R. Thacker will speak May 2 at the annual Michigan Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers conference in Birmingham.

NONPROFITS

Goodwill Industries of Greater Grand Rapids announced the opening of a Goodwill Attended Donation Center at 5429 Northland Drive, the seventh donation center in the Greater Grand Rapids area. It features a lobby area with donations bins and a sorting area to expedite the process of distributing donations to Goodwill Stores. The center is open 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and noon-5 p.m. Sundays.

RELIGION

Pope Francis has appointed David John Walkowiak, a priest of the Cleveland Diocese, to be the 12th bishop of the Grand Rapids Diocese, which serves 82 parishes and 182,000 Catholics in West Michigan. Walkowiak succeeds Most Rev. Walter A. Hurley, who will retire June 18, the same day Walkowiak will be installed.

RETAIL

Forbes Magazine has recognized regional grocery distributor and retailer Spartan Stores Inc. in its annual America’s 100 Most Trustworthy Companies list.

MyFavoriteGardenShops.com, a collective of nine independent West Michigan garden centers, has launched a new website to make it easier for gardeners to find plants, gardening tools, supplies and information while shopping at local businesses.

Spoonlickers Handcrafted Frozen Yogurt has launched a custom-designed mobile unit to serve birthday and graduation parties, wedding receptions, corporate events and summer festivals.

SPORTS

Meijer State Games of Michigan has been selected as a top three finalist for the 2013 Extraordinary Event/Organization Award by the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports. The award honors organizations or events that provide opportunities for physical activity in their surrounding communities. Award finalists were recognized April 25 at the Michigan Legislative Session at the state Capitol in Lansing.

TECHNOLOGY

Iserve Co. LLC announced it has doubled its sales staff, added support staff, implemented a new customer assurance department and extended its call center hours to 24 hours a day, seven days a week through its Network Operations Center, which provides assistance, monitoring and support to customers.

Trivalent Group announced the additions of: Patrick Swem, client services engineer I in the Grandville Service Hub; Jennifer Ouderkirk, virtual chief information officer in the mid-Michigan territory out of the Mt.
