Change Ups: Baker students demonstrate leadership


Four Baker College of Muskegon students garnered awards at the Business Professionals of American National Leadership Conference in Indianapolis. Chad Bazzett won first place in computer network technology and third in IT concepts and placed in the top 10 in systems administration; Ryan Poindexter won first place in systems administration; Joshua Hooker won second place in network administration and fourth in computer network technology and placed in the top 10 in PC servicing and trouble shooting; and Ashley Esch placed in the top 10 in federal income tax accounting.


The Grand Rapids Symphony Society announced the election of six new directors: Don Hunt, Amy Keane, Douglas M. Klein, Joseph B. Levan, Andola C. Mathis and Carol Sarosik. Officers elected: chairperson, Peter M. Perez; chairperson elect, Kate Pew Wolters; immediate past chairperson, Stephen C. Waterbury; secretary, Karen Henry Stokes; treasurer, Rona Caswell; and vice chairpersons, Michael Ellis, Dorothy A. Johnson, Timothy J. O’Donovan and Larry J. Robson.


Comstock Park High School’s HashTagSwag team won the 2014 Junior Achievement Titan Challenge, held in Kalamazoo, outperforming seven competitors in the United States and Canada.

Degage Ministries is one of Kent County Health Department’s 2014 Food Safety Award recipients for showing a high degree of safe food handing practices and sanitation.

LINC Community Revitalization Inc. honored community organizations and individuals with the 2014 Community Spirit Awards. Recipients: Cornerstone Award, Cooley Law School West Michigan Public Defenders Clinic; Outstanding Collaborations Award, Grand Rapids Community College; Innovation Award, Doug and Maria DeVos Foundation; Community Spirit Award, Jerry McComb; Community Spirit Award (Youth), Israel Morales; Independent Spirit Award, Erick Picardo; and Legacy Award, retired Grand Rapids Police Chief Kevin Belk.


Mercantile Bank of Michigan announced the additions of Kurt Dykstra, community bank president, and Craig Oosterhouse, vice president, commercial lender, both at the Holland office.


Scott Patchin, principal at The trU Group, has become certified in the Denison Culture Survey. The survey is an alternative to a traditional employee survey, with a stronger focus on connecting organizational culture and performance.

Owen-Ames-Kimball Co. announced the addition of Joe LaFave, assistant project superintendent.


Calvin College chemistry professor Herb Fynewever is the recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship from the Institute of International Education. He will teach general chemistry at Kathmandu University in Nepal starting in January 2015 and research culture, teaching and student instructor interaction.

Calvin College English professor Deb Rienstra is one of 20 faculty members nationwide chosen by the Council of Independent Colleges and the Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington, D.C.,to participate in July in an Ancient Greece in the Modern Classroom seminar on the “Odyssey.”

Calvin College kinesiology professor Julie Walton is the 22nd recipient of the college’s Presidential Award for Exemplary Teaching, the highest distinction Calvin bestows on a faculty member.

City High School has been ranked the 21st most challenging high school in the Midwest by The Washington Post. It is ranked the fourth most challenging in the state and is among the top 2 percent of high schools in the country.

Grand Valley State University again was the only university in Michigan and one of 61 in the country to receive gold status after completing a sustainability assessment developed by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education.

The Michigan State University College of Human Medicine announced recipients of its 2014 Faculty Awards: Lifetime Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award, James Harkema; Distinguished Faculty Award, Jane Turner; Teacher-Scholar Award, Erin Sarzynski; Outstanding Clinician Award, Heather Laird-Fick; Outstanding Community Volunteer Faculty Award, Richard Roach; Lester J. Mark Charles DeLano, M.D., has been inducted as a Fellow in the American College of Radiology. DeLano is a diagnostic radiologist at Advanced Radiology Services PC in Grand Rapids, medical director at Spectrum Health Hospital, and director of radiology at Michigan State University in Grand Rapids. 

The Center for Physical Rehabilitation announced Nick Platko, physical therapist, is a Certified McKenzie Therapist. There are now seven Certified McKenzie Therapists on staff.

Dickinson Wright PLLC announced attorney Billee Ward has joined its Grand Rapids office as Of Counsel. Ward specializes in health care and corporate law and commercial transactions.

Perrigo has promoted Kacy Norton to human resources generalist for its Holland site. Norton will support human resources for the 400-plus employees populated at this facility.
