Change Ups: Chow Hound moves to new Burton location

Chow Hound Pet Supplies moved its Breton Village store into a new building at 2490 Burton St. SE. The new location gives the pet food supply retailer better visibility and more convenient access for its customers. The store offers food and product supplies and fully stocked self-service dog washing stations. The store will host cats, kittens and small animals adoptions through the Humane Society of West Michigan. Greg and Tyson Keane opened the first Chow Hound Pet Supplies in Grand Rapids in 1989.

The Grand Rapids Public Museum will open two exhibits Feb. 3: Waters Extreme Journey and the 2018 Ethnic Heritage Festival. Journey lets visitors become a water droplet to explore the watershed and learn about why conservation of water is so important; the Festival is a day-long celebration of music, dance, crafts and food representing the various ethnic groups that call West Michigan home.

Varnum attorney Luis Avila was named to the Grand Rapids Art Museum’s board of directors.


Best Financial Credit Union opened its first Ottawa County branch in an aging industrial building on the corner of School and Savidge streets in Spring Lake Village. The 2,500-square-foot building will be the workplace for seven full-time and two part-time employees.


The Grand Haven, Spring Lake, Ferrysburg Chamber of Commerce continues its shopping event, the Winter Market at the Depot. It will start during Winterfest weekend, Jan. 27, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., and will then be open the following Saturdays: Feb. 10, Feb. 24, March 10 and March 24.

The Triangle Associates Inc. presented employee services awards to project superintendent Doug Hodson (the Golden Hard Hat Award); project superintendent Mark Buczek (the Safety Advocacy Award); and project administrator Theresa Riley (the Community Service Award).


Liz Peters was hired as the founding principal of St. Robert Catholic School, an independent elementary school that will open at St. Robert of Newminster Catholic Church, 6477 Ada Drive, Ada, this fall. The school will begin with preschool, kindergarten, first and second grades, with one grade per year added through the eighth grade. Child care also will be provided as soon as feasible.

Tim Koberna, assistant professor of kinesiology and head athletic trainer at Holland-based Hope College, received the 2018 Student Senate Preceptor of the Year Award from the Great Lakes Athletic Trainers’ Association for his outstanding work with students.

Travus Burton was named Grand Valley State University’s director for civic learning and community engagement, replacing Ruth Stegeman, who retired in August.


DTE Energy Foundation provided 5,000 hot meals to Michigan’s vulnerable senior citizens throughout West Michigan during the holiday season. More than 100 volunteers packed, served and delivered meals at multiple events leading up to Christmas Day.

The Ottawa County Parks Foundation received grants from the Wege and Frey foundations totaling $860,000 that will go toward its Grand River Greenway campaign, which is the culmination of the 30-year vision to protect thousands of acres of high-quality natural and recreational lands along the Grand River in Ottawa County and then connect these lands with a multiuse ADA accessible trail. 


The city of Grand Rapids Economic Development Department reported the commitments from businesses that received approval for various city incentive programs during calendar year 2017 include $173 million in new private investment, 835 jobs created with an average wage of $24.12 per hour, 189 new housing units and an annual increase of $839,000 in city tax revenue generated

The city of Grand Rapids named Desiree Foster as human resources director; Eric Jordan as code compliance manager; and Amy Snow-Buckner as acting managing director of communications.

Grand Rapids-based Dematic announced Nypro, a design and manufacturing services provider to the health care and pharmaceutical industry, selected Dematic to supply an Automatic Guided Vehicle system for the company’s manufacturing facility in Gurnee, Illinois.


G&T Industries in Byron Center acquired substantially all the assets of Crane Interiors Inc. of Woodbury, Tennessee. Crane Interiors has operated as a marine sewing/upholstery business for more than 40 years and under its current ownership structure since 1984.


Muskegon Rescue Mission appointed Dan Skoglund as executive director.


Meritage Hospitality Group’s Wendy’s of Michigan’s Change a Child’s Life campaign raised $130,000 for Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital and other local children’s charities. The campaign took place from Nov. 13-Dec. 31 in 50 northern and West Michigan locations.
