Change Ups: Downtown Market snags award

The New Jersey chapter of the American Institute of Architects has recognized Montclair, N.J.-based Hugh A. Boyd Architects with an Honor Award in the Built Open category for its design of Grand Rapids Downtown Market. Grand Action, a nonprofit organization dedicated to revitalizing the city’s downtown, developed the new market. The 132,000-square-foot building is a three-level warehouse-style steel and metal structure with rooftop greenhouses whose focus is local food.

Consumers Energyand Grand Valley State University announced they will create a three-story, 35,000-square-foot leadership center that will be owned by the energy company and designed for professional development for company employees. It is scheduled to open in late 2016 on Grand Valley’s Robert C. Pew Campus.

Venues Today listed Van Andel Arena at No. 2 for all U.S. venues and No. 4 for venues worldwide with a capacity between 10,001 and 15,000. Venues Today measures a venue’s presence on digital platforms Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, as well as check-in data from Foursquare/Swam measuring fans’ on-site social media engagement.

GRANTS

Aquinas College was selected to receive a grant of $238,646 under the Student Support Services Program by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Legislation and Congressional Affairs, to provide academic development, assist students with basic college requirements and motivate students toward successful completion of their postsecondary education.

The Center for Physical Rehabilitation has added Wendi Corelli, manager of athletic training, and Robyn Smith, director of sports and wellness.

HUMAN SERVICES

Mel Trotter Ministries will restructure its thrift stores and auto program: The Grand Rapids thrift store will close and the building will sold; the Belding thrift store building will remain under ownership but will be leased to another retailer; the auto program will no longer be hosted at its Grand Rapids location but will continue to accept donated vehicles. The Sparta and Jenison thrift stores will remain open as usual. MTM will work with a third-party vendor to maximize donation opportunities.

LEGAL

Lakisha D. Favorite and NaChelle D. Webster received Warner Norcross & Judd 2015 Law School Scholarship and Paralegal/Legal Assistant Scholarship, respectively, which assist minority students from Michigan in completing their legal studies. The competitive scholarship is administered and awarded by Grand Rapids Community College.

Michigan Radio in Ann Arbor ha won three national Clarion Awards from the Association for Women in Communications in the Best Radio Documentary Series, Radio Documentary-One Time, and Major News Event categories.

WZZM 13 has added seasoned investigative journalist David Bailey to its Watchdog Investigative Team. Bailey previously was chief investigative reporter for WWMT in Kalamazoo.
