Mel Trotter Ministries named Tonja L.G. Moyer chair of its board of directors, the first African American and only the second woman to hold the position. Moyer has been a trustee since 2009. She has more than 20 years of experience in Lean Improvement and Process Engineering for the health care and manufacturing industries and is passionate about Mel Trotter’s mission of demonstrating the compassion of Jesus Christ to those in need. Moyer currently is the director of continuous improvement at the University of Michigan Health-West, owner of Black Queen Bee honey products, founder of Journey Shaping Consulting and author of the children’s book “Jesus Power.”

Artist and photographer Lynn Strough is the recipient of the top prize for the international Ray and Nancy Loeschner Art Competition for two-dimensional photography 

Global Financial Trust founders James and Amie Moran have been named Best Financial Advising Firm in Grand Rapids by Legal Directorate.

Steelcase is the recipient of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s WasteWise Award in the large business category for reducing the amount of waste going to landfills and incinerators for disposal.

The Grand Rapids Symphonys 20th annual Symphony with Soul Awards ceremony announced the 2022 Dr. MaLinda P. Sapp Legacy Award recipients are Evette Pittman, a community leader and supervisor of the Office of Special Events for the city of Grand Rapids; Vanessa Allen, a longtime Grand Rapids Public Schools educator and former principal; and posthumously, Cedric Ward, a black theater activist, performer and director, and one of the founding members of Symphony with Soul.

Calvin University announced the appointment of Wiebe Boer as its 11th president. Boer was born and raised in Jos, Nigeria, to Christian Reformed missionary parents. He graduated in 1997 as a second-generation Calvin student and is married to Joanna Bachew, from Trinidad & Tobago, who graduated from Calvin in 2003.

The Grand Valley State University Conference & Event Planning Department earned One-Stop-Shop Certification through the Association of Collegiate Conference and Event Directors International.
