Change Ups: Workforce board receives recognition


The West Michigan Works! Workforce Development Board was presented with the 2019 Trailblazer Award in a ceremony held in Washington D.C. The award, which is an initiative of the National Association of Workforce Boards, recognizes innovation and leadership in developing and delivering workforce solutions in the community. The West Michigan Works! Workforce Development Board was recognized specifically for its collaboration with community partners to provide integrated services and cross-training of staff to maximize resources.


Deloitte named Tina Wheeler managing partner of its Grand Rapids practice. She succeeds Lou Moran, who will retire after nearly 39 years with Deloitte. In her new role, Wheeler, a 28-year Deloitte veteran, will help drive client and business growth, and further enhance Deloitte’s strategic positioning in the Grand Rapids market. She also will lead community involvement initiatives, connect with various professional organizations and continue to maintain her client service responsibilities.

The Air Zoo in Portage marked the 40th anniversary of its commitment to sharing the wonders of aerospace and science with the grand opening of its featured exhibit, Memories and Milestones: 40 Years of the Air Zoo.

Kent District Library announced it has been named a West Michigan’s Best and Brightest Companies to Work For by the National Association for Business Resources.

Muskegon-based Lakeshore Museum Center’s Historic Sites opened its doors for the season, allowing tours of the Hackley and Hume Houses, the Fire Barn and the Scolnik House of the Depression Era. The historic sites also will hold many events throughout the season, including the Hackley Day Celebration over Memorial Day weekend, the Victorian Tea, History Buffs for the Whole Family and Scandal Tours. Cindy Todd, professor and chair of the Art Education and Master of Art Education programs at Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University, is the recipient of the National Art Education Association’s National Art Educator Award for outstanding service on a national level and, regionally, the Western Region Art Educator Award and the Western Region Higher Education Art Educator Award.

The Muskegon Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce will recognize the following who are making a lasting impact on the community at its first annual Excellence Awards Luncheon on April 26. The Association for Corporate Growth Western Michigan announced the winners of its 11th annual ACG Cup Competition: The 2019 ACG Cup winning undergraduate team, Michigan State University, represented by team members Zack DeLang, Justin Goldie and Jake Vallier. The team was awarded a $4,500 prize; and the Master of Business Administration Category, Michigan State University, represented by team members Jason Siegfried, Nate King, Charles Fobbs and Kartik Gupta. The team was awarded a $4,500 prize.

DHW revealed a new logo, website and tagline, “For the life of your business,” to reflect its continued evolution in Grand Rapids; it is minority owned and operated; and its first female CEO is Monica King.

HR Solutions Group of West Michigan in Zeeland hired Amber Thompson as an HR specialist. Thompson most recently served as an HR generalist for Munson Healthcare in Traverse City and, prior to that, served as a senior client program manager for Adecco at Herman Miller.


Kent Companies promoted Dustin Nagelkirk to division manager for the Restoration Services Division. Nagelkirk assumes oversight of estimating, project management and production for building restoration and commercial waterproofing services.


The city of Grand Rapids was awarded a $150,000 Great Urban Parks Campaign grant by the National Recreation and Park Association. The funding will be used for stormwater infrastructure enhancements at Ken-O-Sha Park and Plaster Creek Trail and to increase green space, educational opportunities and accessibility.


Cirius Therapeutics in Kalamazoo reported positive results from an interim analysis of exploratory endpoints from the EMMINENCE trial, its ongoing Phase 2b clinical trial evaluating MSDC-0602K in 402 patients diagnosed with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis with fibrosis, were presented at The International Liver Congress 2019 in Vienna, Austria. The interim analysis, which was conducted in the first 328 patients to reach their six-month follow-up visit, demonstrated that patients treated with MSDC-0602K had significant improvements from baseline in measures of liver function and insulin resistance at six months. 


Riverside-based Lindberg/MPH announced the shipment of a 1,100 degrees Celsius Crucible Furnace to a research and development laboratory in the nuclear industry. This crucible furnace will be used for a wide variety of laboratory melting applications, including annealing, ashing, carbon firing, ceramic firing, hardening, melting, nitriding, normalizing, sintering, solution treating and stress relieving.


Bill McKendry launched Do More Good, a nonprofit dedicated to educating nonprofit organizations on the power of branding, marketing, communications and fundraising to further their mission. Katie Appold joined Do More Good as the executive director.


Lambert now ranks 45th on a national list of U.S.-based firms, according to O'Dwyer's, a publication for PR and communications professionals. Citing 32% growth year over year, Lambert moved up nine spots from 2018. The magazine also ranked Lambert as a top-10 financial and investor relations firm and a top-10 environmental and public affairs firm, based on annual fee billings.

Blue Medora announced general availability of its BindPlane for Google Stackdriver service and new log monitoring capabilities, thanks to a partnership between Blue Medora and Google Cloud, which brings to market an embedded monitoring-integration-as-a-service, at no additional licensing cost to Stackdriver customers. Blue Medora BindPlane also includes preview access to a new log streaming capability, that simplifies extending Stackdriver’s observability to enterprise customer data centers and other public clouds.
