One of the newest apartment complexes in the downtown area is opening leasing this weekend.

The 100-unit 616 Lofts on Alabama in Grand Rapids will host an open house on Friday and Saturday and accept applications and deposits for residency.

Friday’s open house will run from 3-6 p.m. and Saturday’s will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The roughly $20-million complex is made up of two buildings at 420 and 421 Alabama St. NW, making up the 100,000-square-foot development by Grand Rapids-based 616 Development.

Within 420 Alabama is 61 apartments with a mix of studio, one, two and three-bedroom apartments, including some bi-level floor plans. 420 Alabama, which is a redeveloped building, also includes a rooftop deck, on-site storage and exterior bike parking.

Floor plans range from 415 square feet to 1,200 square feet, with prices ranging from $900-$1,950 a month.

421 Alabama is slated to open this fall with 39 apartments, including a mix of studio, one and two-bedroom apartments, all with private balconies. The new-build building will also include a community room, outdoor terrace and a shared common deck.

The entire complex has both uncovered and covered parking for residents.

“This is by far one of our most unique communities in terms of layouts and apartment options,” said Caitlin Harvey, design director, 616 Lofts.

“420 Alabama has the character: exposed brick, preserved details and treasures from the past and very unique layouts.

“421 Alabama is a new building with a different feel. There is a lot of amenity space for mingling and connecting with your neighbors.”

Grand Rapids-based Rockford Construction built the complex, which is nearby Rockford’s development with New Holland Brewing Co. on Bridge Street.

Construction on 616 Lofts on Alabama began last summer.
