A local diner is re-opening this month under a new name and ownership after closing last year.
Dan’s Diner, formerly Pal’s Diner, in Forest Hills, at 6503 28th St. SE, is opening on May 29.
Dan’s Diner is owned by Dan Chudik and managed by Sarah Wagner.
Apart from the name change, Chudik plans to keep the diner “mostly the same” but with more “upscale” breakfast and lunch menus.
The former owners of Pal’s Diner, Sam Brown and Barry Brown, sold the restaurant to the owners of Family Friends Veterinary Hospital, which is next door to the diner.
The space has been vacant since then, and Chudik made an agreement with the veterinary hospital to re-open the restaurant. He signed a three-year lease with the first right to purchase after the three years.
Chudik has been wanting to open a restaurant since closing his former restaurant, Tuscan Express, now The Euro Bistro, on 28th Street. He closed the restaurant in 2009, which he attributes mostly to the recession.
Wagner brings over two decades of experience to Dan’s Diner. In 2013, she helped Chudik launch Trattoria di’ Stagone in Eastown, which has since closed. She has spent the last 2.5 years at Aperitivo at the Grand Rapids Downtown Market.
“Classic” breakfast dishes like eggs and bacon will be available at Dan’s Diner, and some menu additions will include lemon ricotta pancakes, bagels and lox and huevos rancheros.
Lunch items will include the “staple” of burgers, fries and malts, as well as grilled beef and pineapple salad, mussels, fresh fish and more.
The diner has applied for a liquor license and will add hours and dining options once the license is approved.
It will also offer outdoor seating.
