A $30-million hotel will start going up in Grand Rapids next month.

The commercial real estate firm Third Coast Development in Grand Rapids and Lodgco Management in Mount Pleasant, a multi-brand hospitality company, said this morning that they plan to develop and co-manage a Hampton Inn & Suites — east of the center of Medical Mile, off Michigan Street, at 425 Dudley Pl. NE.

The five-story hotel will be about 90,000 square feet and hold 142 rooms.

The hotel will also include parking capacity for 200 cars, with two parking levels above ground and a half level of underground parking.

Grand Rapids-based Integrated Architecture is designing the project, and Grand Rapids-based Pioneer Construction is constructing it. Work is expected to begin in April.

“This hotel will offer a product that is currently missing from our downtown hotel offering,” said Max Benedict, principal, Third Coast Development. “It will offer the closest rooms to the hospital out of any existing hotel and will continue to bring development further east on Michigan Street.”

The hotel will feature an indoor pool and fitness center, as well as offer free Internet access and a complimentary hot breakfast.

Third Coast Development believes the property will “become instantly beneficial to the growing Mid Towne portion of Michigan Street,” said Dave Levitt, partner, Third Coast Development.

Third Coast Development already has a number of projects on Michigan Street.

Lodgco Management, which operates 15 hotels in Michigan, is looking to expand its footprint in Grand Rapids, said Michael Smith, Lodgco president.

“As a Michigan-based company, we are excited to work with Third Coast Development on this landmark project for the city of Grand Rapids,” Smith said. ”It’s a great win for everybody.”
