A 25-year industry veteran is this year’s winner of the American Advertising Federation’s highest honor.

Rick Devon, president of Grey Matter Group, earned the Silver Medal Award recently for his contributions in furthering the advertising industry’s standards, creative excellence and addressing many social concerns.

Devon was nominated by his colleagues in the advertising industry and was named the winner after deliberations by a committee of former Silver Medal winners and the current AdFed board members.

Over the past quarter-century, Devon has grown Grey Matter from a one-man operation to now include a staff of 14 professionals.

Grey Matter provides strategy, copywriting, design, photography, illustration, videography and songwriting services.

Devon’s agency has assisted faith-based ministries to develop and promote their brand and offers discounts for nonprofit organizations. He and his wife have helped refugee families through his church’s ministry. He also has created promotional videos for missionary trips abroad.

His involvement with the local advertising industry is extensive.

Devon has welcomed design and advertising students to tour his agency and offered mentorship to interns. He also has worked with Kendall College of Art and Design, the Creative Crawl, the Polishing Center and Grand Valley State University for portfolio reviews and studio tours.

Devon has not only left his footprints in West Michigan, he also has traveled to Myanmar, India, Vietnam, Japan, China, Sierra Leone and Uganda to photograph and direct videos for clients.
