And a child shall lead them

A 5-year-old boy with leukemia and his family have organized a toy drive that led to a busload of gifts arriving at Spectrum Health's Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids.

Spectrum Health says the toys, crafts, books and other gifts — worth about $8,500 — were delivered last week. The effort was a way for Dawson Babiak's family to thank hospital staff.

The drive was launched in the Hopkins Public Schools, where Dawson's father, Jason, teaches science.

Dawson was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic lymphoma in November 2014. He's now in a “maintenance phase,” receiving monthly chemotherapy treatments.

Spectrum Health says the donation represents one of the largest of its kind to the hospital. Staff members say they will give them to children for Christmas and to celebrate birthdays and treatment milestones.
