An appliance maker in the region is planning to nearly double the size of an out-of-state facility.

Whirlpool Corporation in Benton Harbor said today that it plans to expand its Factory Distribution Center in Greenville, Ohio from 327,000 square feet to about 650,000 square feet.

The project broke ground today and should be completed next March.

The facility, which employs 140 people, services all global shipments of KitchenAid small appliances.

Whirlpool said the expansion “reinforces” Greenville as the “global hub” of the company's small appliances business.

Today's groundbreaking follows Whirlpool's $40-million investment in its plant in Greenville, which is part of a larger $80-million project to expand its facilities across Ohio.

Whirlpool sells various brand names across the world: Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag, Consul, Brastemp, Amana, Bauknecht, Jenn-Air, Indesit and others.
