A West Michigan appliance maker has been recognized for its digital innovation.

Benton Harbor-based Whirlpool Corporation said last week it was named a winner of the 2018 Digital Edge 50 Award from IDG Enterprise and CIO Magazine.

The company was selected to receive the award for its Whirlpool Cloud Internet of Things Infrastructure Platform Project, launched in 2016 to allow the company to deploy connected products around the globe faster than before.

Whirlpool Corporation will accept the award at IDG’s AGENDA18 conference from March 19-21 in Miami.

“We are honored to be recognized for bringing consumer-focused innovation to our products, simplifying the lives of our customers,” said Mike Heim, corporate VP and global CIO, Whirlpool.

“With a quickly expanding portfolio of connected products, we saw the need for a secure technology platform solution that could keep pace with innovating for what really matters in day-to-day life, allowing consumers to personalize their in-home experience in a way that helps them care for their families.”

The Whirlpool Cloud Internet of Things platform includes over-the-air automatic updates to appliances that cook based on information provided via the barcode on a packaged food item, among other features.
