A West Michigan appliance maker has been honored for its “sustained excellence” by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Benton Harbor-based Whirlpool Corporation was awarded the 2017 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Award for Sustained Excellence, the company said this month.

Whirlpool was honored for its manufacturing of energy-efficient kitchen and laundry appliances that contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

"The 2017 award reflects our many products that continue to demonstrate efficient-energy performance," said Ron Voglewede, global sustainability director, Whirlpool.

"Whirlpool Corporation has a 47-year commitment to sustainability and a long-standing history of balancing energy efficiency with consumer needs. We are proud of recognitions like these and remain focused on delivering sustainable and innovative solutions."

The EPA specifically recognized Whirlpool in 2017 for its introduction of two new models of heat-pump dryers, continued training of employees and retailers about energy efficiency, collaborating with ENERGY STAR on social media promotion and overall increased focus on sustainability initiatives.

Whirlpool has previously been awarded 26 ENERGY STAR designations in the U.S., and 39 across both the U.S. and Canada, the most awarded to any appliance maker.

"Across our nine U.S. manufacturing operations and in our global technology and design centers in Michigan, our employees are dedicated to building home appliance products that save energy and water without compromising performance," said Joe Liotine, president, Whirlpool North America.

Whirlpool reports about $21 billion in annual sales and has 93,000 employees and 70 manufacturing and technology research centers worldwide.

The company was founded in 1911 and counts the Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag and Consul brands, among others, in its manufacturing portfolio.
