The Arena District is bringing a bit of Asia to downtown next week as its opening offering in its yearly cultural celebration.
On Jan. 29 from 6-8 p.m., the coalition of restaurants, taverns and other downtown businesses near the Van Andel Arena will host an Asian cultural celebration at JW Marriot’s Six.One.Six. restaurant at 235 Louis Campau St. NW.
The event will feature a Japanese tea ceremony, along with free Japanese and Thai hors d’oeuvres. Rick Mirandette, of the Mirandette Martial Arts Center, will present a tai chi and karate demonstration.
In addition, Levy Lenon, president of the Laotian Association of Holland, will share his experiences of being an Asian-American living in West Michigan and discuss what his organization offers.
A live origami art demonstration, a Laotian dance performance and music featuring the Gu Zhen, a traditional Chinese instrument, also will be part of the evening.
The event is free and open to the public, but reservations are required because seating is limited. Seats can be reserved by going to the Arena District’s Asian Culture Facebook page or by emailing the district at firstname.lastname@example.org.
