An art-supply distributor in town has begun a $33-million expansion project.
Notions Marketing, a family owned company, recently broke ground on a 120,000-square-foot addition to its headquarters in Grand Rapids’ Garfield Park neighborhood, at 656 Cottage Grove St. SE.
The company’s headquarters is currently more than 1 million square feet.
Rockford Construction in Grand Rapids is the construction manager for the project.
The new facility will house automation technologies that will allow the company to continue to scale, while meeting market expectations for same-day shipments.
Notions Marketing is also in the process of hiring 250 employees to meet increased demand at its facility.
The company currently employs about 900 people.
Bobbie Medema, Notions Marketing VP and third-generation family member, said the expansion marks a “significant milestone” for the company.
“It boldly re-states our commitment to our neighborhood,” Medema said. “We like that we are able to continue to create jobs here in the city.”
Therese Thill, VP of business development at The Right Place in Grand Rapids, said it’s not just about the number of jobs Notions Marketing is adding, but where those jobs are being added that is a particularly important aspect of the expansion project.
“Working to create jobs is important, but creating jobs like these in the 49507 zip code is vital to the success and growth of the neighborhood,” Thill said.
Notions Marketing is one of the largest art-supply distributors in the world.
The company offers more than 200,000 unique items to more than 10,000 retailers worldwide.
