AT&T turns on 4G LTE network for Grand Rapids mobile market

If AT&T users’ iOS devices display “LTE” at the top, they’re connected to the carrier’s new 4G LTE mobile network.

West Michigan AT&T smartphone users should check the top left corner of their screens to see if they can spot the letters “LTE.”

LTE, or Long Term Evolution, is now available for AT&T customers in the Grand Rapids area, as was promised by AT&T back in September.

LTE, a wireless broadband technology, supports roaming Internet access for cell phones and tablets. It is recognized as 4G, or fourth generation, technology, because it offers 10 times faster speed than 3G, which first allowed full access to the Internet.

“We’ve been actively testing 4G LTE in Grand Rapids for several weeks, and customers with 4G LTE-capable devices may have seen areas where 4G LTE was live,” said Jermaine Spight, AT&T Michigan spokesperson. “We plan to continue deploying 4G LTE throughout Michigan as a part of our ongoing investment in our wireless and wire-line networks.”

Smartphone customers can choose from tiered data plans, starting at $20 a month, Spight said, while existing smartphone customers do not have to make any changes to their data plans. Existing smartphone customers do, however, need to ensure that “they have a 4G LTE-compatible SIM card in their device.”

4G LTE, expected by AT&T to be the mobile broadband for the relative future, cuts down on latency, or connection slowness –– theoretically supporting downloads at 300 megabits per second, allowing for richer and more complicated application availability.

Spight said the following devices already compatible with LTE: Apple iPhone 5; Apple iPad; Apple iPad mini; HTC One X; HTC Vivid; HTC Titan II; HTC One X+; Windows Phone 8X by HTC; Motorola Atrix HD; Nokia Lumia 820; Nokia Lumia 900; Nokia Lumia 920; Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket; Samsung Galaxy S III; Samsung Galaxy Note; Samsung Galaxy Note II; Samsung Galaxy Express; Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9; Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1; Samsung Galaxy Exhilarate; Samsung Focus 2; Samsung ATIV smart PC; LG Nitro HD; LG Escape; LG Optimus G; Pantech Burst; HTC Jetstream; Sony Xperia Ion; Sony Xperia TL; ASUS Vivo Tab RT; Pantech Flex; Pantech Element; AT&T USBConnect Momentum 4G; AT&T Mobile Hotspot Elevate 4G and AT&T Mifi Hotspot Mifi Liberate.
