A supplier of carbon fiber parts to the auto industry is planning to bring up to 620 jobs to the area.
Wixom-based Plasan Carbon Composites plans to invest $29 million in infrastructure and renovations to expand the production capability at its 197,000-square-foot plant in Walker, at 3195 Wilson Ave. NW, The Right Place said this afternoon.
The manufacturer is known for its lightweight carbon fiber parts and assemblies for the Corvette Stingray, Viper SRT and Shelby Mustang GT500KR.
The company is expecting to add approximately 530 semi-skilled operator jobs and 90 administrative and managerial positions over the next three years in Walker.
Re-locating to Michigan
Plasan moved its headquarters from Bennington, Vt. to Wixom last year.
This year, the company ceased manufacturing operations at the Vermont site and started re-locating people, capital and production capabilities to its Walker plant, which it opened in 2011, according to The Right Place, a regional economic development nonprofit.
Jim Staargaard, president of Plasan Carbon Composites, said the company’s growth strategy is based on its experience with the Walker operation.
“Our experience in launching the new facility in West Michigan has been great and made the decision easy on how and where to expand with our next phase of growth,” Staargaard said.
Established in 2006, Plasan Carbon Composites is the result of Israel-based Plasan SASA Ltd. purchasing the automotive division of Vermont Composites.
Plasan received a $6-million incentive package for its investment in West Michigan, which consisted of local support from the city of Walker and a performance-based grant from the Michigan Business Development Program.
“Plasan’s investment and expansion in West Michigan further demonstrates our region’s unique expertise in manufacturing innovation,” said Birgit Klohs, president and CEO of The Right Place in Grand Rapids. “When you combine West Michigan’s commercial design talent with innovative manufacturing materials, like carbon fiber, the options are limitless for companies like Plasan.”
