A Kalamazoo-based credit union is adding another location on the lakeshore.

Consumers Credit Union said last week that it broke ground on a one-story, 2,154-square-foot office at 1818 E. Sherman Blvd. in Muskegon.

This will be Consumers’ first office in the city of Muskegon and its 24th location overall. The financial institution has recently been expanding into the lakeshore market with two offices in Holland and one in South Haven, as well as a branch in Grand Haven that is expected to open in midsummer. Consumers also is planning a Lansing location.

The new Muskegon branch will serve Consumers’ 1,000-plus existing members in the Muskegon area, and it is expected to open in early 2022. Firms on the project include Holland-based contractor GDK Construction and Kalamazoo-based building designer Bosch Architecture.

“It’s always such a pleasure to work with partners that share our passion for serving others,” said Chuck Geenen, partner of GDK Construction. “We enjoy building quality spaces intended for the betterment of our communities.”

The office will open with Consumers’ TellerPlus+ technology in the lobby and drive-thru lanes. The location also features a free coffee bar, wireless banking stations with Wi-Fi and loan and member service areas.

The new office will offer a full range of services, including new accounts, loans, credit cards, mortgages, investment services, business services and more. The office will employ between four and five full-time staff members, including a mortgage loan officer and business development manager.

“Having a footprint in Muskegon is part of our strategy to move up the lakeshore and expand choices for Holland and Spring Lake members,” said Kit Snyder, president and CEO of Consumers. “We anticipate an increase in demand for consumer loans and mortgages, in particular, and are committed to providing the financing options that meet the needs of our community, including businesses.”
