Breweries medal at Great American Beer Festival

Six Michigan breweries won medals over the weekend at the nation’s biggest beer festival.

Michigan breweries took home six of the 275 medals in 92 categories. More than 6,600 beers were entered from 1,552 breweries.

Founders Brewing Co. in Grand Rapids highlighted the Michigan medals from the Great American Beer Festival in Denver. The brewery won gold in the Imperial Red Ale category for its reDANKulous.

Rockford Brewing won bronze in the English-style Brown Ale category for its Rogue River Brown.

Arcadia Brewing Co. in Kalamazoo won silver for its Classic English-style Pale Ale.

Three other Michigan breweries won silvers.

Short’s Brewing Co. in Elk Rapids won for its Experimental Beer Melt My Brain.

Right Brain Brewery in Traverse City won for its Rye Beer Concrete Dinosaur.

River’s Edge Brewing Co. in Milford won for its Belgian-style Dubbe or Quadruple, Dubbel Entendre.

Pat Evans, a reporter with the Grand Rapids Business Journal, won silver in the Best Local/Regional Writing category in the North American Guild of Beer Writers Awards for the article "Creativity is the name of the game."

Other markets

Thirty-one medals went to breweries in Colorado.

San Diego County in California came away with 19 medals and 10 went to breweries located in the city of San Diego.

Oregon saw its breweries come away with 19 medals as well.
