Breweries medal at World Beer Cup

Four breweries in the region returned from the World Beer Cup with medals.

Founders Brewing Co. in Grand Rapids and Saugatuck Brewing Co. won gold medals at the Denver event this month, while Grand Rapids Brewing Co. won silver and New Holland Brewing Co. won bronze.

The World Beer Cup, produced by the nonprofit Brewers Association, is held every two years. This year’s event featured 4,754 beers from 1,403 breweries in 58 countries.

Winning brews

Founders took home its first gold medal at the World Beer Cup in the Herb and Spice Beer category for its Mango Magnifico con Calor. The beer beat out 100 other brews in the category.

Saugatuck Brewing Co. won gold for its Bonfire Brown Ale in the American-Style Brown Ale category.

Grand Rapids Brewing Co. took second place in the Wood- and Barrel-Aged Strong Stout category for its Distinguished Eagle.

New Holland Brewing Co. won bronze for its Pilgrim’s Dole in the Old Ale or Strong Ale category.

Several other Michigan breweries won medals at the event: Atwater Brewery, Bastone Brewery, 51 North Brewery and Redwood Brewing.
