A local brewery has announced its next ArtPrize beer.

Grand Rapids-based Founders Brewing Co. said today it will release Green Zebra, a watermelon gose-style ale, in six-packs of cans.

The beer will be on tap in the taproom Aug. 15 and on shelves in mid-August.

“ArtPrize is one of the most well-attended public art events in the world, and we are proud to continue our support,” Founders Co-Founder and President Dave Engbers said. “We love playing with expectations when it comes to brewing our ArtPrize beers, and Green Zebra is the perfect example of that.”

A gose is a German-style beer made with sea salt and results in slight sour and sweet notes, almost like lemonade.

Green Zebra clocks in at 4.6 percent ABV.

“The gose style is very unique and pretty unknown, even amongst craft beer drinkers, and we wanted to bring our version of it to a larger audience,” Engbers said. “In fact, for the first time ever, our ArtPrize beer will be available across our entire distribution network, so even more of our fans can get to know this style we’ve fallen in love with.”

It’s the first Founders release to be debuted in cans, and it will be retailed in all 46 states Founders distributes to and at a suggested $9.99 per six-pack.

It’s the fifth year of Founders brewing a beer for ArtPrize, with beers such as Mosaic Promise, Pale Joe and Spectra Trifecta being produced in the past.
