A specialized bridal business is the latest winner of 5×5 Night.

Grand Rapids-based Tailor Made Bridal, which sells to "curvy" and plus-size women, is the winner of 5×5 Night’s $5,000 grand prize for February.

Tailor Made Bridal was awarded the prize at LINC Gallery in Grand Rapids. Varnum LLP also will provide $5,000 in legal services to Tailor Made Bridal as part of the grand prize.

Owner Krystle Hunter says she'll use the $5,000 to facilitate a market testing period, when she’ll open two to four plus-size bridal pop-up shops, according to the 5×5 Night website.

Hunter is planning her first pop up for May, which will incur various estimated costs: sample inventory ($2,500); a part-time employee ($500); bridal show marketing ($750); a rental fee ($350); and more.

Tailor Made Bridal

Tailor Made Bridal says it’s the first bridal retailer in West Michigan to "cater exclusively" to plus-size women.

By operating in a local market, the business says it reduces consumer costs and time traveling to competitors based in Chicago and Detroit, while building a personal relationship with customers.

Tailor Made Bridal aims to serve women size 14 and up who've had difficulty finding a dress fitting their sizes and quality specifications.

In addition to its custom-made offerings, Tailor Made Bridal offers pre-worn formal dresses for $75 and below, casual dresses for $30 and below, bridal accessories and more.

5×5 Night

Founded in 2011 by Start Garden, 5×5 Night is a monthly pitch competition awarding $5,000 to one of five business ideas selected by a popular vote to pitch their ideas.

The five finalists are each allowed five minutes to present their idea using five slides as visual aids.

The next 5×5 Night will be held March 28 at Start Garden in downtown Grand Rapids, at 40 Pearl St. NW.
