The owner of a Grand Rapids café is opening a second location in Ada Village.
Owner Matthew Fuller said today he will open a second MudPenny location in Ada, at 496 Ada Drive SE, in early 2020.
Details for a grand opening will be announced at a later date.
“It’s an honor to be a gathering spot for people of all different backgrounds,” Fuller said. “We really care about every customer that comes through our door, and we believe everyone deserves excellent service.”
MudPenny is known for its hybrid restaurant/coffee bar structure.
The 2,600-square-foot Ada location will continue that arrangement, offering breakfast and lunch with “farm-to-table and organic ingredients” and menu items “for any dietary need,” including gluten free, vegan, vegetarian and keto.
It also will have a house-roasted coffee and organic juice bar and will continue to offer delivery for its corporate catering business.
Fuller started MudPenny in 2012 as a coffee cart in the lobby of the Waters Building in downtown Grand Rapids.
In 2013, he moved to a small cafe in Forest Hills and started catering food for local corporate events and meetings.
In December 2018, Fuller and his team opened the full-service restaurant in Grand Rapids’ Roosevelt Park neighborhood, at 570 Grandville Ave. SW.
The name “MudPenny” comes from 17th– and 18th-century England, when coffee houses were called “penny universities” and were the only place not segregated by class, Fuller said. The first part of the name comes from the slang term for coffee: “mud.”
Fuller plans to donate 1% of MudPenny’s sales in Ada to nonprofits in the area, as he does with the Roosevelt Park location.
