A Spring Lake resident has been named president of Camira Group, the North American division of the U.K.-based textile manufacturer Camira, which serves the office furniture industry and others.
Rune Akselberg’s position was newly created to oversee the region, leading the company’s strategic business development and market penetration in North America.
Akselberg will continue to live in West Michigan, where many of Camira’s key office furniture customers are headquartered.
He will be focused on growing the company’s commercial fabric business through both the specifier and furniture manufacturer channels, as well as further developing Camira’s role as a fabric supplier in the mass passenger transport sector under the Holdsworth brand.
“I’ve known and admired Camira for years through my work in both Europe and North America, and I’m very excited about moving from being a customer to co-worker,” Akselberg said. “The company has a great business model, the most sustainable fabrics in the industry and a genuine drive to become the natural choice for fabric solutions on the global stage.”
A native of Norway, Akselberg served most recently as vice president of sales and market development for furniture manufacturer Izzy+ in Spring Lake.
Earlier in his career, Akselberg worked in Paris in a sales position with Steelcase France, before moving to Norwegian ergonomic seating leader H.A.G.
At H.A.G, Akselberg led sales, marketing and brand development efforts throughout Europe, the Middle East, Asia, South Africa and Australia.
He later was named president of H.A.G. in North America and relocated to Greensboro, N.C., where he led a turnaround of the company from 2001 to 2007.
He speaks three languages and holds a degree in French, as well as master in business and marketing.
Camira designs and manufactures fabrics for various industries and applications: commercial offices, hospitality, government, institutional interiors, health care, cinema and auditorium seating.
Camira operates two manufacturing facilities in England and a plant in Lithuania.
One of the company’s most celebrated products is Sting, a fabric made from nettles.
Camira employs about 500 and sells about 10 million yards of fabric annually, generating revenues of approximately $80 million
Camira re-entered the North American commercial interiors marketplace in 2010, after a four-year lockout period, following a management buyout from Interface in 2006.
The company has North America operations in Indianapolis, where it stores inventory and operates a cut-yardage program for rapid distribution throughout North America.
The company was founded in 1974 as Camborne Fabrics.
