When’s the last time you thanked an entrepreneur?
Each year since 1963, the president of the United States has issued a proclamation designating one week to celebrating the 28 million small businesses that drive our nation’s economy. This holiday is known as National Small Business Week, and this year it takes place from May 1-6.
This year’s theme of National Small Business Week is “Dream Big, Start Small.” Collectively, small businesses create two out of three net new American jobs, produce close to half of the United States’ goods and services (non-farm private GDP) and embody our nation’s spirit of innovation and progress (source). So while big dreams might start small, it’s clear that small businesses have a significant impact on each and every one of us.
The U.S. Small Business Administration is hosting a variety of national events to honor small businesses. Head of the U.S. SBA, Administrator Maria Contreras-Sweet will kick off the week in Washington D.C. with a keynote address and awards presentation. Michiganders can watch the event live online. The SBA is also offering a variety of free educational webinars covering topics like voluntary benefits, EMV chip cards and emerging payment technologies, small business cyber security and tips for getting your business financially fit. The SBA’s webinars can be accessed online. Follow all of the action throughout the week using the official event hashtag, #DreamSmallBiz.
While National Small Business Week creates opportunities to celebrate small businesses around the country, there are many exciting events going on to honor entrepreneurs right here in Michigan.
One of the most exciting events is Michigan Celebrates Small Business, the state’s premier small business awards ceremony. Each year, Michigan Celebrates seeks to elevate and recognize Michigan’s most successful growth companies. This year, the awards ceremony is taking place on May 5th, during National Small Business Week.
“Michigan Celebrates Small Business embodies Michigan’s entrepreneurial spirit,” said Jennifer Deamud, associate state director of the Michigan Small Business Development Center. “The program shines an important spotlight on the success of Michigan’s small business community. The awardees being honored have played a significant role in growing Michigan’s economy and creating jobs.”
More than 60 businesses, including the 2016 Michigan 50 Companies to Watch, will be honored during the awards dinner. Awardees, guests and small business supporters will gather for a cocktail reception, keynote speaker and the awards dinner, which will be held at the Lansing Center. More information on the event is online, and make sure you congratulate the awardees!
Google has also announced a variety of events offered during National Small Business Week, many of which take place right in West Michigan. These free workshops cover important topics like growing your businesses online, how to leverage Google Apps, promoting your business using online advertising and measuring website analytics.
