Wolverine Building Group recently finished construction of a new three story, 26-unit apartment complex for low-income seniors in Grand Rapids.
Delaware Heights, at 6 Delaware St. SW in downtown, is sort of a sister building to Delaware Manor, another affordable senior housing community, at 10 Delaware St. SW.
Both buildings on Delaware Street are owned by Citizens for Better Living, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing affordable living to low-income seniors at least 62 years old.
Delaware Heights has 35,550 square feet of living space and was designed by noted local architect DTS Winklemann.
The new building cost $3.2 million to build, and the project was funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
More than rent
The Rev. John and Linda Grier oversee daily operations at the Manor and at Heights.
“Everybody is here to serve the people and at the heart of it is Rev. and Mrs. Grier,” said Margaret Davey, president of Paragon Management, which specializes in managing senior housing.
“We do more than collect the rent and keep the buildings safe and sanitary. We make sure there are all kinds of activities, and we have unbelievably happy residents,” she added.
In March, Davey was presented with a Community of Quality Award for an Exemplary Development for the Elderly by the National Affordable Housing Management Association, which highlighted her work on Restoration Towers, a senior housing complex in Detroit.
Three years ago, NAHMA gave Davey a Best Turn Around Property award for Delaware Manor.
“The Griers take a lot of pride in providing something more special than the average affordable housing complex,” said Jim Reyers, Wolverine Building Group manager for the project. “They have an interior decorator and make it homey. They are really dedicated to their residents.”
