City official pleads no contest to fraud charge

A former municipal official in the region has pleaded no contest to fraud.

Former Greenville Public Safety Director Mark Reiss entered the plea last month in Montcalm County Circuit Court.

Reiss allegedly allowed his ex-wife, Christine Reiss, to remain on his city health insurance after they divorced in 2014.

They were accused of defrauding an insurance company out of more than $100,000 over 15 months.

Mark Reiss resigned in February as public safety director, after serving in the position since 2013.

A jury convicted Christine Reiss of three counts of health care fraud last month and acquitted her of seven other counts. She remains in jail, while she awaits sentencing on June 22.
