A Grand Rapids suburb is considered one of the 10 “Best Towns for Families” in the country.

East Grand Rapids is the only Michigan city that appears on the ranking in the latest issue of Family Circle, which hits newsstands today.

Family Circle was aided by New York research firm Onboard Informatics, which provided real estate, demographics and other data for the “perfect place to call home.”

Family Circle says East Grand Rapids “packs a lot of punch in its 3.4 square miles.”

The publication says walkability is one of the city’s main positives.

“Those of us who live and work in East Grand Rapids know this is a special community for raising a family — and, indeed, for all residents,” said East Grand Rapids Mayor Amna Seibold. “We are thrilled and honored that a respected national publication such as Family Circle recognizes this as well.”

Cathy Oossee, an East Grand Rapids resident, tells Family Circle the reasons why she and her family live in the city: the lifestyle, community, family feel, small-town ethos, proximity of nearly everything and public school system, which ranks among the top 5 percent of schools in the state.

“Our residents certainly can be proud to call this great city home,” Seibold said. “All those who work hard to keep our tradition of excellence going — from city workers to elected leaders to school employees — can also be proud of this designation.”

Family Circle, a Meredith Corp. publication founded in 1932, looked at 4,200 communities with populations of between 10,000 and 150,000.

From the initial list, 1,200 communities with median household incomes between $50,000 and $100,000 were selected.

Those locales were ranked based on a variety of criteria: affordable homes, quality schools, access to health care, green space, low crime rate and financial stability.
