A distributor of cleaning products has won gold again for energy-efficient operations at its 114,000-square-foot headquarters and distribution center in the region.
Nichols said this month that its building in Norton Shores received a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, Gold re-certification, version 4.0, by the U.S. Green Building Council for existing building operations and maintenance.
Nichols said the building, at 1391 Judson Rd., is the first ever to receive the designation for an existing building in LEED version 4.0’s new warehouse and distribution center category.
Nichols’ headquarters was previously certified LEED Gold, version 2.0, in 2010 for existing building operations and maintenance.
Existing buildings must be re-certified as LEED every five years.
Latest green progress
Since its initial certification, Nichols said it has reduced its energy usage by 23 percent. It also diverts 87 percent of its waste due to its recycling and composting efforts.
Nichols achieved 16 of a possible 20 points that could be awarded for energy optimization during re-certification, compared to tallying seven of 15 points in its initial certification process.
To increase the building’s energy optimization, it has been outfitted with energy-efficient lighting and an energy-efficient HVAC system, paint that contains low or no volatile organic compounds and office furniture from Herman Miller and Haworth, which is documented for sustainability.
Nichols’ headquarters and distribution center was built in 1996 as a cross-docking operation and purchased by Nichols in 2005.
After some modifications were made, Nichols moved its distribution center to the building and a year later, relocated its headquarters.
The building features a two floor, 12,000-square-foot office space housed inside the structure’s shell.
Muskegon-based Hooker DeJong, Inc. was the architect for the renovation project, and Clifford Buck Construction in Muskegon was the construction manager.
Nichols, founded in 1936, has eight locations across Michigan, Ohio and Indiana.
The company provides a wide variety of cleaning, packaging and safety products for multiple industries: food processing; education, health care; hospitality and others.
The U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED certification program is intended to reduce energy and resource depletion by encouraging the building and maintenance of energy-efficient operations.
Every couple of years, LEED revises its certification qualifications, and the council introduced version 4.0 in the fall of 2014.
The council says LEED is the most widely used green building rating system in the world.
