Clock ticking on charity auction for ArtPrize necklace

One lucky jewelry lover will soon be wearing a diamond-studded necklace that doubles as an ArtPrize entry.

The clock is running out on the charity auction for the custom-designed necklace, “The Grand,” designed by downtown’s Craft-Revival Jewelers at 16 Ionia Ave. The eBay-based auction ends at 8 p.m. today, said Jayson Case, the store’s co-owner.

The money raised by the necklace will go to three local nonprofits: Friends of Grand Rapids Parks, Kids' Food Basket and the Humane Society of West Michigan. A public vote, set to end the morning of Oct. 8, will determine which nonprofit receives 80 percent of the auction bid. The other two nonprofits will receive 10 percent each. Each supporter can vote once every 24 hours.

"We really wanted to do something to give back after we've been here for these last two years," Case said. "We really saw ArtPrize as a platform to show our skill set with the necklace and then also to give back by giving all the funds away to charity."

More than 100 hours went into creating the necklace that includes the downtown Grand Rapids skyline, complete with 117 sparkling diamonds making up the outline of the Grand River.

Case said possible buyers have shown interest in wearing the necklace to special events or even displaying it inside their home. The identity of the auction winner will be kept private at the discretion of the purchaser.

"Right now, the current bid is at $7,000," he said. "I'm definitely excited for all the bids coming in last minute and for someone to get a good deal on the necklace."
