A local college is buying a West Side industrial building for $6.5 million.

The Grand Valley State University Board of Trustees approved yesterday the purchase of the Ferris Coffee & Nut facility at 227 Winter Ave. NW in Grand Rapids, as part of the plan for its Design and Innovation Center for the Padnos College of Engineering and Computing.

GVSU plans to move into the 63,385-square-foot facility in summer 2018.

The Ferris shop at the facility will remain open to the public.

Ferris purchased the 165,000-square-foot American Seating building at 601 7th St. NW in Grand Rapids late last year, and it plans to move there early next year.
