A local college has finished an $8-million project to renovate an athletic facility.
Grand Rapids Community College’s upgraded Ford Fieldhouse, on the main campus at 111 Lyon St. NE, opened to the community last week.
The facility received three new classrooms, two additional basketball courts and portable basketball hoops, upgrades and new equipment in the fitness center, increased seating and technology in the team locker rooms, an updated athletic training room and murals and trophy showcases in the Paganelli Foyer.
There is now air conditioning throughout the building, and the Gordon Hunsberger Arena received LED lighting.
Ford Fieldhouse is used for Exercise Science Department classes, GRCC athletics, commencement and public events.
Students and the public have access to the exercise room, basketball courts, indoor track and pool.
GRCC said the $8 million for the project came from college savings.
Troy-based Integrated Design Solutions, which has a Grand Rapids office, was the architect on the project.
Grand Rapids-based Rockford Construction was the construction manager for the project.
