College producing MLK Commemoration Week

A local college is hosting a week-long series of speakers honoring Martin Luther King Jr.

Grand Valley State University’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Week will feature several free speaker sessions in January at various locations.

The keynote speaker will be David Stovall, a professor of African-American studies and criminology, law and justice at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He will speak on Jan. 21 at 1:30 p.m., following a silent march on campus, at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena in Allendale.

Shannon Cohen, founder and principal of Grand Rapids-based Shannon Cohen, Inc., a consulting firm that provides emotional health strategies for business and community leaders, will speak on Jan. 23 at 4:30 p.m. in the Grand River Room at GVSU’s Kirkhof Center in Allendale.

Peter Onuf, a retired professor of history at the University of Virginia, and Annette Gordon-Reed, a Harvard Law School professor and Pulitzer Prize winner, will discuss race and slavery history on Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. in room 215 at GVSU’s Eberhard Center in Grand Rapids.
