Are you a target for cyber crime?

In this age of NSA data gathering and cyber-hacking, it’s a relevant question that’s at the heart of an upcoming cyber security conference aptly named, Are You the Next Target? The conference, which will address information security topics relevant for both businesses and consumers, is schedule for 7:30 a.m.-noon on Wednesday, April 23, at Grand Valley State University’s Eberhard Center, 301 W. Fulton St., downtown Grand Rapids. The event is free to the public, according to its website.

The conference will feature two keynote sessions with Colby Clark, director of incident management at Fishnet Security, and Jennifer Puplava, an attorney at Mika, Meyers, Beckett and Jones who specializes in technology and intellectual property law.

Maggie Kennedy, spokesperson for the event, said the conference is being organized by Trivalent Group, Fishnet Security, the West Michigan Cyber Security Consortium and the Better Business Bureau Western Michigan.

This also is the first year of the conference, she said, adding that she is expecting at least 200 to attend.

“Cyber-attacks keep coming. As soon as we think we know how to protect our data, resources and identities, there is a new way to attack, steal or use them,” she said. “We will have a number of breakout sessions that will provide information on the latest techniques and best practices to take your personal and business security to the next level.”
