A consignment car dealer is hitting nothing but green lights on the road to growth.

GR Auto Gallery said last week that it has purchased a new space that it will be renovating, expanding and eventually moving into on Sept. 1.

Grand Rapids expansion

GR Auto Gallery is currently located in Kentwood, at 3851 Model Ct. SE, and has about 19,000 square feet of warehouse space and about 3,000 square feet of office space, said John Hoekstra, owning partner, GR Auto Gallery.

It closed on its new space in Grand Rapids, at 4722 50th St. SE, last month for about $1.285 million, Hoekstra said.

The new space, which was formerly home to SOS Office Supply, is about 29,000 square feet, with about 4,500 square feet of it being office space.

Grand Rapids-based Copper Rock Construction is renovating the space and adding a 6,000-square-foot expansion to the showroom space. The project will cost about $270,000.

GR Auto Gallery hopes to add more cars to its gallery and talent to its roster.

The company is looking to add about three to four employees within the next 12 months.

National expansion

GR Auto Gallery also operates stores in Traverse City and Wixom, and it’s also looking to add locations.

“We’re looking to open stores in different parts of the country,” Hoekstra said.

He added that the long-term plan is to have 10-15 stores around the country.

Hoekstra, who helped found the company in 2010, hopes to open two locations by the end of this year, and he’s eyeing New Hampshire and Phoenix.

“We grew our business in a down economy,” Hoekstra said. “We went from just the three of us owners to a staff of 11 people just in Grand Rapids.

“The industry we’re in is very exciting, and it’s something I think we took the lead on in terms of consignment business."
