A local contractor has finished an $8-million, out-of-state project for FedEx.

Grand Rapids-based A.J. Veneklasen said this winter it completed facilities for FedEx Freight at its 35-acre property in Lima, Ohio, at 3200 McClain Rd.

FedEx Freight facilities provide the company with the ability to transfer shipments among trucks and service vehicles.

The project included a 45,000-square-foot freight facility — a pre-cast concrete and pre-engineered metal structure with 75 cross-dock doors.

The project also included a full-service garage and gas station on the site.

FedEx had outgrown its Lima operation, necessitating the upgrade.

The overall project took nine months to complete.

AJ Veneklasen has performed multiple projects for FedEx.

Project team

No AJ Veneklasen crew members were stationed full-time in Lima, and crew members flew to Lima on an as-needed basis.

A project manager visited the site every week, while a superintendent was on site Monday through Friday. A carpentry crew was at the site for more than six weeks and traveled home on the weekends.

Ohio trade contractors were also used on the project.
