A local construction firm has added to its leadership team.

Grand Rapids-based Wolverine Building Group hired Deborah Guyton as its first VP of human resources.

Guyton is the second woman who Aaron Jonker and Curt Mulder have named to their leadership team since becoming co-owners in January 2018.

Jonker and Mulder said they have made an intentional effort to diversify their leadership team since becoming the new owners.

“I can’t think of a business owner out there that does not recognize that not only is our workforce demographic changing, but our clientele demographics are changing as well,” Jonker said. “For a long time, Curt and I have believed that it is critical to have diverse voices represented at our senior level to position ourselves for future growth.”

Mulder added that “not only does Deborah bring a wealth of experience to the team, but she’s also helping us look at the challenges of human resources, workforce development and talent attraction through different lenses.”

Guyton has more than 30 years of experience as a strategic human resources leader.

Previously, Guyton spent 17 years with Mercy Health serving in various HR roles: compensation and benefits consultant and team leader; manager of employee relations; chief diversity officer; senior HR business partner;  and HR leader for Mercy Health’s Service Line, encompassing 1,050 employees and 911 beds across three acute care facilities.

Guyton maintains her Senior Certified Professional designation in HR and her Senior Professional Human Resources designation. She is an executive coach and board chairperson for the Women’s Resource Center.

She holds an associate's degree in business and secretarial and a B.S. from Davenport University and a master of arts in educational ministries from the Grand Rapids Theological Seminary at Cornerstone University.

Wolverine Building Group, founded in 1939, specializes in industrial, multi-unit residential, health care, office, restaurant and retail construction.
