A construction firm in the region was recognized on the national stage for its excellence in safety.

Holland-based Elzinga & Volkers received the Pinnacle Award for safety at the 29th-annual Excellence in Construction Gala last month in Long Beach, California. The event was produced by the Associated Builders and Contractors, or ABC.

The Pinnacle Award for safety recognizes the “best of the best” or industry leaders providing an example for others, as well as guidance and training for others looking to better their programs.

“Receiving the Pinnacle Award is not something we take lightly at E&V,” said Tony Roussey, COO, Elzinga & Volkers.

“We have been given the opportunity to show how a successful world-class safety culture can succeed without foregoing profits. I am proud of all the men and women who work hard daily to put safety first. This award is a testament to our employees, and that at E&V, we can make a positive impact in construction industry safety.”

E&V was the lone West Michigan company to be honored at this year’s awards ceremony. In 2018, the company was honored with a National Excellence in Safety Award.

The ABC National Safety Excellence Awards recognize companies that exhibit a continued commitment to job-site safety and safety performance. Programs are judged to be exemplary by the ABC National Environment, Health & Safety Committee.

“ABC is a top-performing national organization and holds safety in the highest regard, and because of this, we are greatly honored to sit in the top one percent of the 21,000-member organization, as it relates to safety, for the second consecutive year,” said Mike Novakoski, president and CEO, Elzinga & Volkers.

Awards are based on data submitted through Safety Training Evaluation Process applications, essay questions and video interviews with company presidents, CEOs or principals about their corporate safety culture.

Award categories are based on a company's total work hours per calendar year.
