Construction worker dies after incident downtown

Authorities said a construction worker has died after an incident at a job site downtown.

The man died after being struck by a large piece of wood that fell at the building redevelopment site, reportedly at 50 Monroe Ave. NW.

Investigators said high winds Saturday might have contributed to the wood falling on 48-year-old Luciano Marbon of Grand Rapids. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Marbon was an employee of a subcontractor.

The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating what happened at the construction site.

Grand Rapids-based CWD Real Estate Investment, which is leading the redevelopment project that includes work on two buildings, said it's "stunned and incredibly saddened" by his death and is working with authorities.

The project involves renovations for hotel and office space.
