Allied Mechanical Services in Grand Rapids recently received a National Diversity Excellence Award from the Associated Builders and Contractors.

Allied Mechanical Services won in the Subcontractor Category. The award will be presented at the 30th annual Excellence in Construction Awards at ABC Convention 2020 in Nashville, Tennessee, on Aug. 18.

“Our success with creating a diverse company stems from the culture that has been instilled,” said Steve Huizinga, president of Allied Mechanical. “It is important that our leadership views each employee as an individual and not just part of a group. It is our philosophy that some of the best people have tough pasts but when they are given support and see our commitment in them through the tough times, they thrive.”

The ABC National Diversity Excellence Awards recognize ABC members who display exemplary diversity leadership in their workforce, supply chain and community with best-in-class recruitment policies, retention practices, and education and mentoring programs.

“Allied Mechanical Services shows an unmatched commitment to a diverse and inclusive construction industry, which generates new ideas and drives innovation,” said 2020 ABC national chair Tim Keating, owner and president of R.C. Stevens Construction Co. in Winter Garden, Florida.

“Allied Mechanical Service’s leadership is showing the construction industry how to best meet the needs of a 21st-century workforce and attract people typically underrepresented in our industry.”

Allied Mechanical Services does not utilize a specific diversity program but instead actively participates in events in local communities that focus on helping underrepresented groups of people.

Award winners were selected by a panel of industry partner associations that share ABC’s strategic goal to grow a diverse and inclusive workforce.

ABC’s Diversity Committee provides leadership and direction to chapters and member companies to promote diversity through education, awareness and business practices.
