A Texas-based engineering firm will no longer employ workers at a Southwest Michigan power plant.

According to a notice addressed to the Michigan Department of Labor, American Electric Power has chosen to terminate its contract with Texas-based APTIM and select a different contractor to perform maintenance modification at its Donald C. Cook Nuclear Plant in Bridgman.

AEP’s decision affects 108 APTIM employees at the Cook plant, according to the notice. APTIM said the affected employees will be temporarily furloughed from the site as part of a regular “contractor-free” period planned prior to AEP’s decision to terminate its contract with APTIM.

The temporary furlough period was from Dec. 16-Dec. 26 for maintenance employees and Dec. 23-Jan. 2 for project employees. All employee layoffs are expected to be complete by Jan. 31, 2020.

According to APTIM, part of the transition will include efforts to employ affected workers at AEP or with the new contractor at the Cook site.

All employees who wish to remain with APTIM are encouraged to apply for any job openings within the company at aptim.com.

APTIM specializes in engineering, program management, environmental services, disaster recovery, complex facility maintenance and construction services for government, oil, gas, chemical, industrial, commercial and power clients.

The Texas contractor employs over 10,000 people, according to LinkedIn.com.

AEP is an Ohio-based power company that owns or operates approximately 60 generating stations across the U.S., with a combined capacity of approximately 26,000 megawatts.
