Contractors from the region have helped raise money for student scholarships by playing in a basketball tournament.
Buist Electric beat Allied Mechanical Services on Saturday in the final of a 3-on-3 basketball tournament hosted by Grand Rapids Public Schools, benefiting the school district’s Academy of Design & Construction.
The Associated Builders and Contractors Western Michigan Chapter organized the event and Triangle Associates was the title sponsor.
Participants in the tournament included firms from across the region, including Rockford Construction, Kerkstra Precast and Feyen Zylstra, as well as teachers from the district.
The $12,500 that was raised will go to student scholarships for post-secondary training and education.
During the competition, students also had an opportunity to win Celebration! Cinema gift cards during three point and free-throw contests. A $1,000 scholarship was also up for grabs for a made half-court shot.
The money raised is $2,500 more than last year.
The academy attracts students with interests in architecture, engineering, design and construction.
Its programs are designed with involvement from partnerships with companies across the city. Students in the programs can earn credit toward post-secondary trade certifications or college.
