A credit union has purchased an 80,000-square-foot office building in the region that will become its new headquarters.

St. Joseph-based United Federal Credit Union, or United, on Tuesday closed on the purchase of the former Whirlpool Corporation building at 150 Hilltop Rd. in St. Joseph.

The sale price was not disclosed.

No direct hiring is planned as a result of the expansion, but the space will be used “to support the credit union’s long-term corporate growth plans,” according to United.

There will not be a branch on the site, but it will have an ATM for guests and employees.

“We are excited about what this new headquarters will mean for the future of the credit union,” said Terry O’Rourke, president and CEO, United Federal Credit Union. “We will be able to bring more teams together in one space and have the room to attract new talent and create a first-class working environment for our outstanding employees.”

Design and construction work on the building will begin this summer and last about a year.

United is still reviewing contractor bids.

Renovations will include layout changes and parking lot and outdoor space updates. Employee committees have been created to provide input on design and amenities.

The leadership team, including O’Rourke, will work at the new headquarters. Decisions are still being made on which other teams and departments will relocate there.

The credit union will keep its current corporate offices in St. Joseph, at 2807 S. State St., and in Niles, at S. 11th St.

United and Whirlpool Corporation worked with the Benton Harbor-based economic development agency Cornerstone Alliance to establish a special commercial rehabilitation district for the property to “return it to a productive employment center.”

The move was supported by the city of St. Joseph and Berrien County Board of Commissioners.

Founded in 1949, United Federal Credit Union has more than 174,000 member-owners worldwide and manages over $2.8 billion in assets.

United has branches in Arkansas, Indiana, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina and Ohio.
