Sweet and savory crepes are coming to the Downtown Market.
Penelope’s Creperie is the newest vendor to join the bustling indoor market, which opened at the end of last summer.
This is the second creperie venture for owners Andreas and Nicole Papangelopoulos, who owned a creperie in Athens, Greece for more than five years.
Construction on the space begins this week, and the grand opening is scheduled for May 26.
Penelope’s Creperie will offer 20 crepes and a create-your-own option.
The menu will feature a range of crepes: a baklava crepe filled with honey walnuts and pistachios; an Elvis crepe filled with Nutella, banana and peanut butter; savory options such as BBQ, pesto and Caesar and others.
The creperie will also offer a full breakfast, lunch and dinner menu of Mediterranean fare, as well as to-go items like Mediterranean salads and yogurt parfaits and a variety of imported gourmet Greek items, including olives, olive oil, tapenades, rusks, cooking sauces, sesame and nut bars and more.
“There are places to buy crepes on every corner on some Greek islands, but nothing like this in West Michigan,” Andreas Papangelopoulos said. “Nicole and I want to bring together the distinct flavors of our home countries and create a new, flavor-rich experience for our city.”
Nicole Papangelopoulos is a Grand Rapids native who moved to Greece for work in 2005. While there, she met Andreas Papangelopoulos, and they were married five years later.
The Papangelopoulos family moved back to the U.S. while expecting their first child and settled in Grand Rapids.
Penelope’s Creperie is named after the couple’s two-year-old daughter.
“For almost nine months, the Downtown Market has brought together diverse artisans from all backgrounds and cultures,” said Mimi Fritz, president and CEO, Downtown Market. “Penelope’s Creperie is an excellent addition to the Downtown Market, with both freshly prepared food and grab-and-go options that can’t be found anywhere else in town.”
With this newest addition, the indoor market hall features 21 vendors, with room for at least three more.
The hall is also supposed to eventually add at least one sit-down restaurant and a brewery.
