A developer is proposing to make its mark on the skyline downtown.
Portage-based Hinman has submitted plans for a 40 story, 418-foot-tall building in Grand Rapids, at 10 Ionia Ave. NW, according to Rhonda Baker, historic preservation specialist with the city of Grand Rapids Planning Department, this afternoon.
The proposed site is a corner parking-lot property in the heart of downtown that runs along Fulton Street W and is across the street from the tapas bistro San Chez.
If the project moves forward as planned, it would be the tallest building in Grand Rapids.
The first 11 floors of the building would be used for a hotel, with the rest being used as residential space, Baker said, who also said the plans look as though it would be 40 finished floors and two for a “mechanical area.”
A public hearing on the proposed project will be held at the next Grand Rapids Historic Preservation Committee meeting on July 6. The site falls just within the committee’s zone, inside of Louis Street.
The deadline for documents for the committee meeting is next Wednesday afternoon, with a public agenda available afterward.
The committee looks at the context of a building's design and other factors, and Baker added that the body doesn't look at the use of a building.
She is unsure of how the committee will view the project.
