Developer plans 86 apartments off Medical Mile

An apartment complex with a restaurant and retail space is being planned just north of Medical Mile.

Orion Construction in Grand Rapids, backed by its development arm, Orion Real Estate Solutions, recently submitted plans to the city of Grand Rapids to develop The Gateway at Belknap, at Hastings Street NE, from Coit Avenue NE to Clancy Avenue NE, said Corey Bixby, a spokesperson for Orion Construction.

ConceptDesign in Grand Rapids is desiging the project.

The project would include 86 apartments and parking, as well as about 6,500 square feet for a locally owned restaurant and about 5,000 square feet of retail space, Bixby said.

“The gateway itself, it’s just crossing the highway on Coit, so it seems to be the entrance to the Belknap area,” said Ryan Wheeler, development coordinator, Orion Real Estate Solutions.

Wheeler said he suspects the project’s proximity to Medical Mile would be appealing to young professionals.

The site

The land Orion wants to develop on is home to a number of houses. The majority of the homes are either being rented or owned, Wheeler said.

Wheeler added that Orion has received good feedback on the project from the neighborhood association.

“We have had three neighborhood association meetings and one public neighborhood meeting,” Bixby said.


The firm has submitted an application to go before the planning commission on Aug. 14.

Pending approvals, Bixby said the project could start next spring and be completed in the summer of 2016.
