The final beam and tentative opening date are in place for a new $28-million hotel.
Crews from Grand Rapids-based Pioneer Construction and hotel operators took a break last Thursday morning to sign and set the last beam at the five story, 142-room Hampton Inn & Suites in Grand Rapids, east of the center of Medical Mile, off Michigan Street, at 425 Dudley Pl. NE.
The balance of the construction work, including walls, electricity and lighting, should be completed by August. Hotel staff should be trained before a tentative opening date of Sept. 1.
The hotel will be about 90,000 square feet and feature a three-level parking garage with space for 200 cars, indoor pool and fitness center, as well as offer free Internet access and a complimentary hot breakfast.
The property is being designed by Integrated Architecture in Grand Rapids.
“There was a design change that gave us a little bit of a later start,” said Max Benedict, partner, Third Coast Development. “We were behind schedule for about four weeks, and now we’ve more than made it up. We’re actually a little ahead of schedule.”
Benedict said the beam ceremony went well and was a special moment for him. He had his three-month-old son was with him and put his son's hand on the last beam.
“He’ll always be able to drive by and know that was the building daddy was working on,” he said.
