A franchise of “digital” gyms has entered the Michigan market via Grand Rapids.

Koko FitClub in Rockland, Mass. opened a local club this fall and will host its official grand-opening ceremony on Jan. 8 at 5 p.m., at 2845 Thornhills Ave. SE.

The event will feature the franchise’s Chief Fitness Officer Michael Wood, who was twice named one of the “Top 10” trainers by Men’s Journal.

The event will also offer food, drink, a raffle and other prizes.

Koko FitClub is known for its use of the digital strength machine Koko Smartrainer.

The franchise has seen rapid growth since it opened its first location in Boston about seven years ago, spreading to about 130 locations in about 30 states, gaining tens of thousands of members.

“Many come from personal trainers to save money or have left their old gym, because they were bored and not seeing positive changes in their bodies or their health,” said Randy Wysong, owner, Koko FitClub of Grand Rapids Cascade. “Koko provides the right mix of science and fun in every workout.

“Members stay motivated by pounds lost and strength gained, knowing for certain that they are always getting the best workout for them, without ever having to think about it or plan it out for themselves. We take our role of fitness and fun very seriously.”

Digital-based workouts

The Koko Smartrainer works like a kind of digital coach for members, allowing each member to build on personalized 30-minute fitness regimens. The technology can also prescribe exercise and nutrition plans.

“They’re nothing like traditional gyms — no TVs, no obsessive bodybuilders flexing in front of mirrors,” Koko FitClub says on its website. “Each club is a quiet, light-filled studio where members come to do short, efficient workouts tailored to their needs and goals.

The franchise add that members are “out the door in 45 minutes.”

“Everything is tracked and analyzed digitally, with up-to-date results stored in the cloud and accessible on all devices.”
